Logic: Level 1

Based on the classical text Al-Sullam al-Munawraq by Imam al-Akhdari, Taught by Ustadh Yusha Jung

Logic is to the mind what grammar is to speech; it organises your mind, protects you from mistakes, and gives structure to your thoughts.

It gives you a clear, ordered way of understanding the world, so instead of being swayed by loud voices and personal bias, you can recognise what is based on sound reasoning, what is not, and why.

For a student of Islamic studies, logic is an indispensable tool used in every page you read and in every lesson you attend. It helps you follow the reasoning of scholars, connect proofs to conclusions, and avoid relying on guesswork and biases.

What you will study in this course

The definition and purpose of logic
Discover what the scholars mean by manṭiq, why they call it an “instrument science,” and how it acts like grammar for the mind.

Types of knowledge
Learn the difference between simply understanding something and firmly judging it as true or false, and why this distinction is the starting point for every serious discussion in logic.

Words, meanings, and concepts
You will explore how one word can carry different meanings, how to distinguish between universal and particular concepts.

The five predicables
You will see how concepts relate to each other through genus, species, differentia, specific property, and accident.

Definitions and descriptions
You will be guided through how to build a sound definition that truly captures the essence of a thing, how to spot incomplete or faulty definitions, and when a simple description is enough.

Syllogisms and valid reasoning
You will study how to join premises so that a conclusion follows with necessity, learn the basic structure of a syllogism, and become familiar with the key patterns of valid inference laid out in Al Sullam.

Conditional arguments and their uses
You will learn how to handle “if, then” statements with confidence, how to test whether they work, and how to recognise them in everyday reasoning and in reading Islamic texts.

Common errors and fallacies
You will train your eye to catch typical slips in argument, learn how logicians name and classify these mistakes, and begin to notice them in debates, discussions, and even your own thinking.

...and much more.

Ustādh Yusha Jung began his studies at 17 years old, with the memorisation of the Holy Qur'an and Tajweed at the Imam Shatibi institute. He then began studying under Shaykh Ahmed Saad, continuing his Qur'anic studies.

With Shaykh Ahmed Saad he began studying Maliki Fiqh, including Ibn Ashir, the Risaalah of Ibn Abi Zaid and Tadrib Al-Salik. This is in addition to studying texts in Usool al-Fiqh, Aqeedah, Arabic Morphology, and Logic. Following a traditional approach to knowledge, Ustadh Yusha has had the opportunity to commit many key texts to memory and continues with this pursuit into the present day.

In 2021, he studied modern Arabic at Qasid Institute, Jordan, as part of his bachelor's degree course at SOAS in Arabic and English Literature, which he graduated from with first-class honours.

Ustadh Yusha has also been teaching, from a young age, the recitation of Qur'an, Tajweed, and Aqeedah.
